How many hedge plants?

Plants per row = length ÷ spacing + 1

A 30 ft privet hedge at 18 in (1.5 ft): 30 ÷ 1.5 + 1 = 21 plants in a single row. A staggered double row needs about 41.

A double row is planted about 12 to 16 in (30 to 40 cm) apart with the plants offset, like a zigzag. It makes a dense hedge faster and is common for beech, hornbeam and other bare root plants.

What are typical hedge spacings?

Boxwood, low formal edging 12 in (30 cm)
Beech or hornbeam, double row 16 in (40 cm)
Privet 18 in (45 cm)
Cherry laurel 30 in (75 cm)
Arborvitae, tall screen 3 ft (90 cm)

Planting a hedge

Dig a trench rather than single holes. Roots spread more evenly.
Plant bare root hedging in late autumn to early spring while it is dormant.
Mulch a strip either side and water through the first summer.
Trim lightly in the first years to make the base bush out.
