How does tree spacing work?

Trees are usually planted in rows. The distance between trees in a row and the distance between rows can differ, for example to leave room for a mower or tractor.

Trees = (length ÷ spacing + 1) × (width ÷ row spacing + 1)

A plot 100 ft by 45 ft with fruit trees 15 ft apart in rows 15 ft apart: 7 trees per row × 4 rows = 28 trees.

Planning the rest of the job? Use the Hedge spacing calculator and the Plant spacing calculator too.

What are typical spacings?

Forestry and woodland planting 6 to 7 ft (2 m)
Windbreak, single row 8 ft (2.5 m)
Semi-dwarf fruit trees 12 to 15 ft (3.5 to 4.5 m)
Large shade trees 30 ft (9 m) or more

Use the mature canopy width as a guide. Trees planted closer grow tall and thin; planted wider they spread out and fruit better.

Before you plant

Keep trees well away from buildings, drains and overhead lines.
Run rows north to south so both sides get sun.
Order a few spares in case some do not establish in the first year.
