How many pavers do I need?

Pavers = area ÷ paver size × (1 + waste)

A patio 12 ft by 12 ft with 6 × 9 in pavers: 144 ft² ÷ 0.375 ft² = 384 pavers. Add 5% for a running bond and order about 404.

The gaps between pavers mean each one covers slightly more ground, so the calculator includes the joint width you enter. Keep a few spare pavers from the same batch for future repairs.

Patterns and waste

Rows offset by half a paver. Quick to lay with few cuts.

What goes under pavers

Patio or walkway base gravel 4 to 6 in (10 to 15 cm)
Driveway base gravel 8 to 12 in (20 to 30 cm)
Bedding sand 1 in (2.5 cm)
Joint sand Brushed in after laying

The calculator works out base gravel and bedding sand in cubic yards and tons, using about 1.35 tons per cubic yard (1.6 t/m³) for both.

Laying tips

Dig deep enough for the base, the sand and the paver thickness.
Compact the base in layers of 2 to 3 in with a plate compactor.
Give the surface a fall of about 1/4 in per foot (2%) away from the house.
Set edge restraints before you brush in the joint sand.
