How is sod sold?

In the US, sod usually comes in slabs about 16 by 24 inches, each covering 2.67 square feet, stacked on pallets of 450 to 500 square feet. Some farms sell larger rolls. In metric markets it is sold in rolls of about 1 m². Pallet sizes vary, so ask your supplier what theirs covers.

How do I measure my lawn?

Split odd shapes into rectangles, measure each one and add them together.
For a circle, multiply the radius by itself and then by 3.14.
Measure only the area you are turfing, not beds or paths.
Add 5% for simple shapes and up to 15% for lots of curves and obstacles.

How does the calculation work?

Pieces = area × (1 + waste) ÷ piece size

A lawn 30 ft by 20 ft is 600 ft². Add 5% and you need 630 ft². At 2.67 ft² per slab that is 237 slabs, or 2 pallets of 450 ft².

Preparing the ground

Remove old grass and weeds Before anything else
Loosen the soil 4 to 6 in (10 to 15 cm)
Add topsoil where it is thin 1 to 2 in (2.5 to 5 cm)
Rake level and roll lightly Just below paths and edges
Lay sod the day it arrives. It dries out fast on the pallet.
Stagger the joints like brickwork and push the edges tight together.
Water deeply straight after laying, then daily for the first two weeks.
