How do I measure a lawn?
How does the calculation work?
Lawn area = section 1 + section 2 + section 3 − areas to subtract
A back lawn 50 ft by 30 ft plus a side strip 20 ft by 15 ft, minus a 100 ft² patio: 1,500 + 300 − 100 = 1,700 ft².
What the number tells you
Sod
Area + 5%, in 2.67 ft² slabs or 1 m² rolls
Grass seed
About 5 lb per 1,000 ft² (25 g/m²) for a new lawn
Fertilizer
Based on pounds of nitrogen per 1,000 ft²
Watering
About 1 in (25 mm) a week in summer
For exact figures, take your area to the sod, lawn seed, fertilizer or irrigation calculator.
